The Learning Resources Division and the Academic Support Center co-sponsor this series of educational workshops designed to help develop the critical reading, writing and research skills necessary to excel in higher education.
Each workshop will take place multiple times to accommodate a wide range of schedules and are intended for students at all class levels.
The Learning Resources Division and the Academic Support Center hope to provide students with valuable learning experiences that reiterate lessons learned in class and enhance their overall preparedness.

The Art of Note Taking – This workshop introduces you to multiple note-taking strategies and, more importantly, shows you how to distinguish between critical information and peripheral details.
Library Research Basics – Many scholarly and library resources are now accessible online. This workshop will cover library resources that are accessible to UDC students via the library’s website. It will also cover using Google Books, Google Scholar, and will introduce search techniques for finding appropriate scholarly materials for college-level assignments.
Outlining & Thesis Construction – This workshop will give you the steps to begin tackling a prompt and develop the framework for your writing assignment. You will learn strategies for effective outlining, and the elements of a strong thesis statement.
Zotero Creating Citations in Seconds – Zotero is a free Firefox extension that allows users to save citation information and create citations and bibliographies or works cited lists in a Word document. This workshop will provide information on downloading Zotero and the basic features of its use.
Introductions & Body Paragraphs – Learn tips on how to strengthen your essay introductions and supporting body paragraphs. This workshop will focus on transitional phrases, hook sentences, quote set-ups, and other structural elements.
Editing Rough Drafts – This workshop focuses on the editing techniques that will strengthen your rough draft. It will focus on grammatical and stylistic elements such as punctuation rules, passive voice, and common grammatical pitfalls. It will also introduce students to the concept of peer review.
Formatting Citations – Learning when and how to cite outside sources in your assignments can be confusing. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics on when you need to include citations in order to avoid plagiarism. It will also include information on how format your in-text citations and works cited page using MLA and APA Style.
