The Instructional Design Process — The ADDIE Model
Analysis
Perform front end analysis (needs, learner, environmental, etc.)
Identify learning outcomes and objectives
Design
Determine appropriate learning theories and models that fit the learning domains and content
Perform the task analysis based on the learning objectives and outcomes
Determine appropriate instruction strategies and tactics that fit the theories and models selected
Select the appropriate media that best fit the learner population, learning environment, instructional theories, model, strategies and tactics.
Development
Load materials into LMS or other system
Develop or identify learning objects
Implementation
Execute the course
Evaluation
Evaluate the effectiveness of instruction at all phases of planning, design and development. Although this model places evaluation at the end of the process instructional designers perform formative evaluations throughout every step of the instructional design process.
Key differences between online versus face-to-face course design
By some estimates, designing an hour of online instruction takes an average of 40 hours.
The lack of face-to-face interaction, teaching online courses require that instructors incorporate a variety of instructional strategies into learning activities to accommodate various learning styles from the beginning stages of planning.
Additionally, because the lack of face-to-face interaction, instructors actually spend more time interacting with students via phone, email.
Online courses provide many opportunities for students to engage in real-world inquiry based learning opportunities.
